Simon Hobbs Professional Background

I am a specialist Consultant Vascular Surgeon and have developed a specific interest in providing local anaesthetic, minimally invasive solutions to treating varicose veins and thread veins.

I completed my undergraduate education at the University of Birmingham in 1998 and then undertook basic and higher surgical training in the West Midlands in many of the large regional vascular units. I was then awarded the prestigious British Society of Endovascular Therapy (BSET) Endovascular Fellowship post in Liverpool, gaining valuable experience in the minimally invasive management of vascular disease.

In 2010 I was appointed as a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon at the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust and now split my time between Wolverhampton and Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley as a member of the Black Country Vascular Network.

Clinical Interests

I am passionate about providing high quality care for patients with varicose and thread veins. I believe that the majority of varicose veins and thread veins can be treated with minimally invasive, state of the art techniques, under local anaesthetic as a walk-in, walk-out procedure with little down time. Clinic appointments and procedures are performed in a relaxed atmosphere and I ensure that discussions about treatment are delivered in language that patients can easily understand.

I am trained in the use of Duplex ultrasound, which is an essential tool in the assessment of varicose and thread veins. Accurate assessment of the anatomy and function of the veins, especially the deeper “feeder” veins, ensures that tailored, individualised treatment plans can be recommended, providing optimum results.

During my training I spent a dedicated two and a half years period performing research and conducting clinical trials which culminated in the award of a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. I have over 25 publications in peer-reviewed surgical journals on a broad range of vascular topics, have presented work at National and International conferences and have written a number of book chapters.

Teaching and Training

I am the educational lead for vascular training in the Black Country and take an active lead in education of doctors in training, supervising a number of vascular specialist trainees. I run a number of Nationally recognised courses and am frequently invited as a faculty member to teach on Local and National courses, involving lecturing and one to one hands on practical sessions.

Outside Interests

Outside of work I have a fun and varied life. I am married to a local GP and my two children engage most of my spare time. I coach junior rugby at our local club and I enjoy fell walking, squash and racketball.
